I am building a Team called "ALL IN" to support the St. Louis Walk & Roll to Cure FSHD on 9/14! This event is held in many other cities around the country, but this will be the first in St. Louis. I will be there with my team...walking, rolling, and raising money that will support efforts to find a cure! Event details outlined below!
Please consider being a part of this cause that is VERY NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART❤! There are currently no available treatments or cures - but there is hope! This Walk & Roll will help to build connections, empower community members, raise awareness, and most importantly, fund critical and promising research.
What is FSHD?
Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, or FSHD, is a genetic disorder that leads to the weakening of skeletal muscles. It affects an estimated 1 in 8,000 individuals. It affects everyone differently, but over 70 percent of patients experience debilitating pain and fatigue. There is no effective treatment or cure—but there is hope. I'm committed to making sure that no one faces this disease alone.
Why I am passionate about FSHD:
One of my dearest family friend in Lake St. Louis has a daughter that suffers from this debilitating disease. Things we take for granted, such as smiling when happy, brushing and washing your hair, walking and performing other daily activities with out extreme fatigue are hard or impossible for her.
Her mom and my friend, Marsha Sverdrup, has a working background in Genetic Testing and Counseling. She is also the St. Louis Chapter Director. Her husband, Fran Sverdrup, has a PHD in Biochemistry from Pittsburg School of Medicine and is currently working on a cure through St. Louis University as Associate Professor in the Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He also works with several other outside laboratories racing to find a cure.
Needless to say...they are super smart and are doing a ton to advance research in FSHD. Funding is critical to any disease research!
